Learning with Lucas: Part 4 of 4

Dear Diary,

It’s been six years since Luke left. And in those six years, Lucas has made tremendous strides.

He’s learned how to calm himself when he becomes overstimulated.

He’s a straight-A student.

He’s extremely knowledgeable about animals.

He’s an aspiring artist.

And he’s becoming quite the storyteller.

He’s still not very sociable…

…but he’s working on it.

There have also been plenty of funny moments along the way.

One, in particular, I’ll never forget.

I was sitting in the living room when Lucas came running in—crying hysterically.

“MOMMMMMMYYYYYY!!”

“What’s wrong, Lucas?”

“They didn’t come!”

“Who didn’t come?”

“The people!”

“What people?”

“The people! They didn’t come!”

“Lucas, I don’t understand. How about you start from the beginning?”

“I wanted a cheeseburger and chicken nuggets from Old McDonald’s, so I called the people to bring it to me…just like they do on TV.”

“Like they do on TV? Lucas, stop crying. Wipe your face and show me how they call the people on TV.”

Lucas wiped his tears, stood up straight, and without hesitation began to sing:

“Like a good neighbor, State Farm is there!”

…and then burst into tears all over again.

It took everything in me not to laugh out loud.

Instead, I got up, grabbed my purse and keys, and took my precious baby to Old McDonald’s for some chicken nuggets.

This journey has had its ups and downs…

but I wouldn’t trade any of it.

Not one moment.
